GP of Portugal: Second consecutive GP win for Livia

GP of Portugal: Second consecutive GP win for Livia
Sunday 10th May 2009
It was the first visit for WMX to Agueda. Watching carefully the tapes of former MX1 and MX2 races to prepare for this event Livia posted the fastest lap in both practice sessions, with a minor gap over constant rival Steffie Laier, only three hundredths of a second behind her. The German grabbed the holeshot of the first race, but Livia was right behind her and grabbed the lead during the second lap; Steffie followed her rival but crashed when both joined the backmarkers. The German rejoined the race but was eventually disqualified for outside assistance.

The track was rougher and the sun was shining when the girls came behind the starting gate for their second heat on Sunday morning. Steffie Laier grabbed another holeshot while Livia had a worst getaway and lost time behind American Ashley Fiolek; she came to second on the third circulation and then worked on securing her second Grand Prix win of the season, as Laier made the break during the first laps.

Livia Lancelot: ‘The second moto today was not as good as the first one on Saturday; I struggled with both starts but today was worse, I had some trouble with the bike when the gate dropped. After the first start I came back to second behind Steffie Laier and then took the lead. Steffie followed me but she made a mistake and crashed. After the second start I had more trouble to pass Ashley Fiolek, she is always changing her lines and it’s always difficult to pass her. When I reached second Steffie was leading easily, I was ten seconds behind and it was smarter to settle for second position rather than try to catch her. I have a strong lead in the series and next weekend we’ll discover another new layout in Bellpuig. I will go there hoping to win a third GP in a row.’

Roger Pourcel: ‘Livia had another great weekend, she was fastest during the first race, and then secured the GP win in the second. We had a minor technical problem in the second heat, and she couldn’t get a good start but recovered to finish second. It was enough to win the GP and make a gap in the standings before the third meeting next week in Spain.’
